Litter Training Your Bunny
LITTER TRAINING YOUR BUNNY
Rabbits are fairly easy to litter train. By following a few simple steps, you can have your bunny completely trained in very little time.
Training For Indoors
Get a litter box and fill it with paper-based litter. You may also want to cover the top of it with Timothy Hay. The choice of litter you use is important, because some types of litter are very harmful to rabbits. Never use clay, cat or dog, or cedar based litter. As weird as it sounds, you should also add some of your bunny’s excretions to the litter box. This helps them understand that this is where you intend for them to excrete. Once your litter box is filled and ready to go, but some hay close by so it attracts your rabbit to it. Be patient, continue putting any stray excretions into the litter box. Reward your bunny with treats when he or she uses the litter box for its correct purpose. You should see results before long. Training For Outdoors
If you are planning for your bunny to live outside, you will most likely have a cage that is sectioned into two parts –
the wire-bottomed part and the wood- bottomed part. Most outdoor cages have a removable sliding tray underneath the wire part. This is your litter box. Fill it with paper-based litter, or simply line it with newspaper. Put some of your bunny’s excretions into it, and put some hay over top of the wire. It is best to have your bunny’s food and water on the wire, so that his litter box and food are in the same location. Again, be patient. Be sure to clean out the cage everyday, putting any stray excretions into the litter box, and making sure that the cage is entirely clean and has fresh bedding. If you are patient and diligent, you should see results before long. If you have a cage where neither of these methods seem as though they will work, use the general idea and adapt it to your needs. As long as your giving your bunny the idea that he needs to excrete in a specific place, and your working with him until he gets the idea, he should catch on very quickly.
